Skin Quality 101: The Only Routine You Need
Four products, two minutes a day. The evidence-based routine that outperforms every 10-step shelf, and why skin evenness is a top-3 attractiveness variable.
Skin is a first-order variable
Perception research is blunt: skin color evenness and texture independently predict attractiveness and perceived age, before observers ever process your proportions. A face with mediocre harmony and excellent skin routinely out-rates the reverse.
The entire routine
Morning (60 seconds)
- Rinse or gentle cleanser
- Moisturizer with SPF 30+ — every day, cloudy or not, indoors near windows too
Evening (60 seconds)
- Gentle cleanser
- Pea-sized retinoid (adapalene 0.1% OTC, or tretinoin 0.025% via prescription)
- Moisturizer
That's it. That's the routine.
Why so short?
Every additional active raises irritation probability, and an irritated barrier photographs worse than an unexfoliated one. The three interventions above have A-grade evidence stacks; almost nothing else in the aisle does. Vitamin C is a defensible fourth if your budget insists.
The retinization valley
Weeks 2–6 on a retinoid bring dryness, flaking, and doubt. This is the adjustment phase, not an allergy. Buffer with moisturizer, drop to alternate nights, and push through — the texture payoff compounds from month 3 to year 3.
Escalation path
| Problem | First line | If insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Acne | Adapalene + benzoyl peroxide | Dermatologist (consider prescriptions) |
| Pigment patches | Azelaic acid or arbutin + strict SPF | Tretinoin, then professional peels |
| Redness | Barrier repair, fewer actives | Vascular laser consult |
| Texture/scars | Retinoid, patience | Microneedling (professional) |
