The Under-Eye Playbook

Dark circles have four different causes — and four different fixes. Diagnose yours before spending a cent.

Four problems wearing one name

'Dark circles' is a diagnosis-shaped hole. Stretch the under-eye skin gently sideways in a mirror:

  1. Shadow moves with the hollow → structural. A tear-trough groove casting literal shadow. No cream touches this; the fixes are volume (filler by a skilled injector) or time (it often worsens; earlier photos prove it).
  2. Color stays put, brownish → pigmentary. Genetic or post-inflammatory melanin. Fixes: strict SPF, arbutin/azelaic acid, gentle retinoid. Months, not days.
  3. Color is bluish-purple, worse when tired → vascular. Thin skin over visible vessels. Fixes: sleep consistency (biggest lever), caffeine cream for events, retinoid to slowly thicken the dermis.
  4. Puffy in the morning, deflates by noon → fluid. See the debloat protocol; elevate your head at night, moderate evening alcohol and sodium.

Most people are a blend — treat the dominant type first.

The routine that covers all four

  • Nightly pea of retinoid to the orbital area (start twice weekly; this skin is thin).
  • Morning SPF to the very edge of the lash line.
  • Sleep like it's your job, because for this region it is.
  • Photograph monthly in identical light before judging any product.

When it's worth professional help

Structural hollows respond dramatically to properly-placed filler — and terribly to badly-placed filler. This is the highest-skill injection site on the face. If you go this route, use the Surgeon Finder and filter for periorbital specialists; review their under-eye galleries specifically, not their lips.
