Cutting Dairy for Acne
Consistently associated with acne in large observational cohorts — skim milk most of all — but the effect size is modest and it is not universal.
Also called: no dairy acne · milk causes acne · quitting milk skin
Verdict — mixed
Real in part — the claim outruns what it actually does.
Evidence grade B
At least one good randomised trial, or consistent findings across controlled studies.
Mechanism
Milk raises IGF-1 and insulin independently of its glycaemic index; both stimulate sebaceous lipogenesis and follicular keratinocyte proliferation.

Several large cohorts and a meta-analysis of nearly 80,000 people find a real association, strongest for skim milk, weaker for whole milk and mostly absent for cheese and yoghurt — which points at the whey/IGF-1 route rather than fat. Worth an eight-week elimination if your acne is inflammatory and unexplained, tracked honestly with photographs rather than memory. It is not a replacement for topical therapy and it does nothing for comedonal acne in most people. Pair it with the low-glycaemic change, which has the stronger trial evidence.
