Mail-Order Clear Aligners
Can work for very mild crowding. Without X-rays and in-person review, the failure modes are root resorption, bite collapse and moving teeth in unhealthy bone.
Also called: diy aligners · smile direct · at home braces · impression kit aligners
Verdict — mixed
Real in part — the claim outruns what it actually does.
Evidence grade C
Mechanistic plausibility, small studies, or observational data. Suggestive, not established.
Mechanism
Sequential thermoplastic trays apply light continuous force to tip teeth. Orthodontic planning normally depends on radiographs to assess root length, bone support and periodontal health — none of which a home impression captures.

The technology is legitimate; the supervision model is the problem. Professional bodies have raised repeated concerns, and the reported harms are the predictable ones — moving teeth in undiagnosed periodontal disease, root resorption, open bites, and cases abandoned mid-treatment when the company changes. Note also that tipping crowns is not the same as moving roots, so many 'straight' results are cosmetically straight and functionally worse. If your case is genuinely a millimetre of lower crowding, the risk is small. Get a panoramic X-ray and one in-person opinion first; that is the step the price difference is buying out.
