Porcelain Veneers
Transformative and irreversible: enamel is removed permanently. The aggressive overseas 'Turkey teeth' version is often crowns after nerve removal, not veneers.
Also called: veneers · turkey teeth · smile makeover · composite veneers
Verdict — mixed
Real in part — the claim outruns what it actually does.
Evidence grade C
Mechanistic plausibility, small studies, or observational data. Suggestive, not established.
Mechanism
Thin porcelain shells are bonded to the labial surface after removing 0.3–0.7 mm of enamel. The aggressive variant reduces the whole tooth to a stump for a crown, frequently requiring root canal treatment.

Conservative veneers on well-selected teeth look excellent and last 10–15 years. What has made this a cautionary tale is the discount version: teeth filed to pegs, pulps devitalised, root canals on healthy teeth, and a 20-year maintenance burden landing on a 24-year-old. UK dental bodies have issued specific warnings about it. The decision rule is simple and unpopular — the less enamel removed, the better the long-term outcome, so a plan that starts with whitening (`teeth-whitening`), orthodontics and bonding, and reaches for veneers last, is the one to take. Anything that requires devitalising healthy teeth for appearance is not cosmetic dentistry.
