Hair
Scalp Massage for Thickness
Two small studies show increased hair thickness from daily standardised massage. Small, slow, free, and not a treatment for active loss.
Also called: scalp massage · manual scalp stimulation · scalp exercise
Verdict — mixed
Real in part — the claim outruns what it actually does.
Evidence grade C
Mechanistic plausibility, small studies, or observational data. Suggestive, not established.
Mechanism
Mechanical stretching of dermal papilla cells alters gene expression in ways that favour hair growth in vitro; in vivo the effect appears as increased shaft thickness rather than new follicles.

Better evidence than it has any right to have: a standardised four-minute daily massage increased hair thickness in a small Japanese study, supported by in-vitro work on mechanical stretching of papilla cells. Both studies are small, the effect is on calibre rather than count, and it took 24 weeks. Nothing here counteracts DHT, so in active pattern loss it is an addition to `finasteride` and `minoxidil`, never an alternative. It costs nothing and cannot hurt — genuinely worth doing, provided nobody sells it to you as the plan.
