Tretinoin is the single best-evidenced topical for skin quality. Decades of randomized controlled trials show significant improvement in fine wrinkles, dyspigmentation, and roughness after 6–12 months of consistent use. Expect an adjustment period ('retinization') of dryness and irritation in weeks 2–8. Requires prescription in most countries; adapalene is an OTC alternative with similar (slightly weaker) evidence.
