DIY Braces & 'Gap Bands'
Elastic bands migrate up the root under the gum and can avulse healthy teeth. Documented tooth loss in teenagers. Never do this.

Verdict — cope
The mechanism does not hold. Your time is better spent elsewhere.
Evidence grade D
Nobody has demonstrated this works. Note that this grades the evidence, not the danger — read the verdict for that.
Mechanism
An elastic placed around two teeth slides apically along the root surface under the gingiva, where it continues to constrict — stripping the periodontal ligament and bone until the teeth are lost.

The full read
This is the most dangerous entry in the dental section and one of the most dangerous in the library, because the mechanism is invisible while it happens. The band disappears under the gum, the patient assumes it fell out, and it keeps working its way down the root. Case reports describe healthy incisors extracted or lost outright in adolescents, with the bone destroyed around them. Real orthodontic force is light, continuous, and applied through brackets to a controlled point on the crown. Closing a diastema properly is a routine, inexpensive orthodontic case — there is no version of this worth improvising.
